The wrist should always be lifted. If it isn't, you're using your weak muscles to lift the back of the hand higher than the wrist, your hand will contract, and you will not be able to gain speed. And you can also develop wrist damage--carpal tunnel syndrome, or swelling at the wrist, leading to compression of nerves, and damage of nerves.
