Julie was born in Paris, France, in 1832, and died at the age of 84 years, in the district of Buena Vista, in the city of Cienfuegos, Cuba, at the house of her daughter Carlota, with whom she always lived.

Her parents were Arnold Cecile Blanchard Cauchois and Pauline Charlotte Eugenie Gougerot Herault. Julie lived in Paris during her infancy. Towards the year 1845 emigrated to the United States of North America with her mother, her father having died in Paris some time before.

Years later in New York, Julie met Lorenzo Martnez Arquiaga, a Spaniard living in Cuba, who had travelled to the city of New York, where he studied and conducted his business, and who later would become her husband. Some time later, they moved to Cuba where her mother fell sick and died, and for this reason Lorenzo advanced their wedding date.

Church San Martin, in Burgos, Spain. My grandfather Lorenzo Martnez Arquiaga was baptised in this church in 1831.

He arranged for Julie to stay with the Count and Countess Aldama, the owners of the Aldama Palace, who were Spaniards and who were friends with Lorenzo and his father. During that time Julie on occasion spent time tutoring the six children of the Count and Countess, until the time of her wedding to Lorenzo. The wedding took place in the palace and it was beautiful, like weddings of that time. It was the year 1855.

From this marriage, five children were born. The oldest, Ramn, was born in 1858. Afterwards were born Carlos, Carlota, Julia Eugenia, and Alberto, who was the youngest and was born in 1868.

Her husband Lorenzo fell sick and died in 1871 when their youngest son Alberto was three years old. Upon becoming a widow, Julie decided to leave Cuba and decided to move to Madrid, Spain with all her children, residing there for seven years. Her children studied in Spain and learned with her the French language very well.

It cannot be ascertained with certitude what were the motives that Julie had to move to Spain, however, it is supposed that she wanted to return to her native country, or get close to the family of her husband Lorenzo in Spain, but the truth is that after some years she decided to return to Cuba. Her children were always by her side until they were married, however, Julie always lived with her daughter Carlota, who married a Spaniard by the name of Antonio Gonzalez Asensio, having with him only one daughter named Maria Julia.

Her oldest son, Ramn, married Mercedes Alvarez Miguenes. From this marriage seven children were born: Lorenzo, Mara Eugenia, Julio, Jose Ramon, Enrique, Mercedes and Alberto.

Her youngest son, Alberto, married Maria Esperanza Perez Manzanares. From this marriage five children were born: Alicia, Albert, Luis, Emma and Elsie.

When Julie Augustine Blanchard Gougerot died in 1915, she was buried next to her husband Lorenzo Martnez Arquiaga in their vault at the Municipal Cemetery of Cienfuegos.

FACT OF INTEREST

Population Census made in Cuba in the year 1899.

Report on the Census of Cuba 1899.

The government office in Washington printed in 1900 the following population census done in the island of Cuba, which is published and archived in a Reference Book at the International University in Miami, Florida, wherein on page 223 of same, it shows that J.B. Jimenez of Santa Clara was the supervisor and J.B. Sanger was the director and general inspector of the same census and the fact of interest is obtained, which I mention, following:

In the city of Cienfuegos were taken in census only 21 women born in France and residents of this locality.

This clearly indicates that my grandmother, Julie Augustine Blanchard Gougerot, was one of the few French women who resided in the city of Cienfuegos, Cuba, at that time. She was born in Paris, France, in 1832, and died in Cienfuegos in the year 1915.
