He Must Be Laughing

There are several well educated, eloquent individuals in the Cuban Exile Community, who for one reason or another have chosen to support the Varela Project, National Dialogue, and Osvaldo Payá. This is perplexing. But I am sure that Payá finds it amusing.

At one time, I also supported the Varela Project. I thought that the dialogue process could serve to widely publicize the reality of the barbarism of the Castro regime, and that the regime's ultimate rejection of real change could serve to convince the world that Castro would never permit a transition to democracy.

But that was before I learned about Payá's intention to simply allow the criminals of the Castro regime to go unpunished. That was before it was pointed out to me that the idea behind Payá's proposals was to allow the same criminals to remain in power, ostensibly under a new system but with the old criminal network in place: Old dogs with new collars - but with the same old tricks.

It is perplexing that well educated Cubans, who claim to long for Cuba's liberation, would support such corrupt ideas as those promoted by Payá. I can't understand it.

Some are suggesting, falsely, that Payá and his projects are not exclusive, that they permit the participation of all Cubans. Payá intends to exclude many of those who most deserve to participate in Cuba's future. His own behavior suggests this, and his writing reflects it.

Rather than serving as a vehicle to usher in a future of freedom, Payá's acts serve as a delaying element, to entertain the thoughts of those who hope for a peaceful transition, who do not yet realize that the regime will never willingly permit democratic reforms.

If you reject the utter injustice of the Castro regime, reject also the falseness of the proposals of Osvaldo Payá.

¨Without justice being freely, fully, and impartially administered, neither our persons, nor our rights, nor our property, can be protected. And if these, or either of them, are regulated by no certain laws, and are subject to no certain principles, and are held by no certain tenure, and are redressed, when violated, by no certain remedies, society fails of all its value; and men may as well return to a state of savage and barbarous independence. --Joseph Story
