Councilwoman Debra Guerrero's
Trip to Cuba

Regarding San Antonio Councilwoman's Planned Trip to Cuba

We believe that her trip to Cuba is not really a cultural exchange but an ideological political matter.

The money she is spending will only benefit Fidel Castro's communist regime and her trip will only generate publicity that Castro desperately needs.

Instead of staying in a hotel with all the comforts and good food Mrs. Guerrero should stay in a neighborhood in which she will see how miserable the people live, but of course Fidel does not allow outsiders to see the real picture.

How can Mrs. Guerrero be thinking of improving women's rights in Cuba where human rights do not exist.

Debra Guerrero should ask what she can do for San Antonio, not what she can do for Communist Cuba.

We would like to acknowledge Bob Martin, president of the Homeowner-Taxpayer Association of Bexar County for opposing spending our tax money to benefit Fidel Castro.

City Councilwoman Debra Guerrero will go to Cuba at the end of the month as planned, but she'll pay her own way instead of spending nearly $2,600 of public money. The City Council was scheduled to vote on spending the money during its meeting Thursday afternoon, but Guerrero withdrew her funding request earlier in the day. She said she didn't want controversy the trip had generated among tax watchdog and veterans groups to overshadow its benefits as a cultural exchange. "Many people in the community a....
