Cuban Embargo Should Be Maintained

by Romelio Carta

Thank God for the embargo.

It is mind boggling to see and hear how the educated young Americans have been conditioned/brainwashed not only to accept but to work toward a totalitarian government in the U.S. and in any part of the world, including neighboring countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, etc.

They do not care any more about feedom or justice for the U.S. or other countries. Cuba is only 90 miles from our coast, with a long history of friendship between both countries. Cuban independence was won by the U.S. intervention in the Spanish-American War in 1896. Control of the country was given to Cuban authorities on May 20, 1902.

The Castro dictatorship had been enslaving the Cuban people for 50 years, half a century, but American politicians, journalists, businessmen, etc., are asking the U.S. government to lift the embargo imposed as a response to the intervention, without compensation, of all Americans' properties.

To those who do not know, or willingly ignore, what the embargo is, let me, a Cuban by birth and anti-Communist by ideology, tell you. The Marxist Cuban government can buy here in the US. all they want agricultural and health goods as a humanitarian exception to the embargo. As a matter of fact, since the year 2000, they had bought about $2 billion from U.S. companies. But they have to pay cash, not credit, for these goods.

Why do the Cuban government and the American Marxists want to lift the embargo? Because of credit. No embargo equals unlimited credit. Will this help the slave people of Cuba? Absolutely not. Lifting the embargo will only perpetuate the Castro dictatorship for a long, long time, perhaps 50 more years.

In 2005, Cuba bought $350.2 million from the U.S., $340.4 million in 2004, and $437.7 million in 2007. The only limitation is they have to pay cash.

For those naives or fellow travelers from the American left, in Sept. 1982, Fidel Castro declared the inability of Cuba to repay principal on external debt, estimated at $11 bilion according to the Wall Street Journal, Sept 2, 1982.

Today, Cuba owes about $24 billion to countries who thought they were doing good commercial deals: Argentina, $1, 967 billion; China, $1.77 billion; Czech Republic, $317 million; France, $1,671 billion; Germany, $339 million; Italy, $466 million; Iran, $296 million; Japan, $2,358 billion; Mexico, $520 million; Russia (post Soviet) $817 million; Spain, $3,184 billion; U.K. (England), $416 million; and Venezuela, $8,009 billion.

As you can see, the U.S. is not in this list thanks to the embargo of the Castro regime.

Are we losing money by not providing it, as the American left asked us to do? Please look again at this list.
